This specimen was lot 49315 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Khanate of Khiva. 500 Rubles, AH 1340 (1921/2). PCGS MS-62. Five pointed star. From the Yakov Averbuch Collection." This type was struck AH 1339-1340. Hand cut dies were used, so many varieties exist. Wikipedia comments, "The Khorezm People's Soviet Republic was the state created as the successor to the Khanate of Khiva in February 1920, when the Khan abdicated in response to pressure. It was officially declared by the First Khorezm Kurultay (Assembly) on 26 April 1920. On 20 October 1923, it was transformed into the Khorezm Socialist Soviet Republic." Stalin and the Russian Communists made short work of all the breakaway republics in the Caucasus and central Asia. The town is now in Uzbekistan.
