SB125-32036r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32036 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Julich-Berg. 1/4 Ducat, 1710. Dusseldorf Mint. Johan Wilhelm II. NGC MS-63. This alluring fractional issue in gold is tied with just one other as the only representatives of the type in the NGC census." Johann Wilhelm was from the Catholic branch of the Wittelsbachs and was elector Palatine 1690-1716. He spent most of his reign in Julich-Berg as the Pfalz had been devastated by the French. His wife, Anna Maria Luisa (1667-1743), was the last of the Medicis and donated her art collection to the Uffizi in Florence, where it still resides. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1710 only but 1710-11 in Friedberg, where it was formerly listed under Pfalz. It was issued on the occasion of his imperial vicariat in 1710.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-1395 (formerly Fr-2011); KM 140, cf. KM-Pn6 (for silver striking).
