Julich-Berg 1639 thaler
This specimen was lot 1145 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$14,153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Jülich-Kleve-Berg | Jülich-Berg, Herzogtum. Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg, 1624-1653. Dicke Reichstalerklippe 1639, Düsseldorf. Geprägt mit den Stempeln des Vierteltalers. Auf das Neue Jahr. Stadtansicht von Düsseldorf mit dem Rhein im Vordergrund, rechts hält eine aus Wolken kommende Hand ein Schwert, oben NON VOS DESERAM (ich werde Euch nicht verlassen, Josua 1,5). Rv. Neun Zeilen Schrift, darunter die Jahreszahl, oben Rosette. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön. Feine Patina. (Germany, duchy of Julich-Berg, Wolfgang William of Palatinate-Neuburg, 1624-53, thick klippe thaler of 1639, Dusseldorf mint, struck on quarter thaler dies, for the New year. This type is unlisted in Davenport and the SCWC. It may actually be a medal. When the native dynasty lapsed in 1609, both Pfalz and Brandenburg claimed Julich-Berg and fought over it until it was partitioned by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.
