Steve Album sale 51, lot 2663

This specimen was lot 2663 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "JHALAWAR: Prithvi Singh, 1845-1875, AR rupee, year 20, in the name of the Mughal Bahadur Shah; amazing example for this type, NGC graded MS65." Jhalawar was separated from Kotah by the British in 1838. Prithviraj Singh (1830-75) was rana 1845-75. His coinage cited Bahadur Shah II, theoretical Mughal emperor 1837-57, until the Indian Mutiny, when he changed his official suzerain to queen Victoria. This type was struck years 1 thru 22, often with garbled AH dates. Later issues struck in the name of queen Victoria were dated using the VS calendar.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.15-11.25 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM C28.
