Sincona sale 47, lot 1462

This specimen was lot 1462 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,560 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GERMANY, Jever, Herrschaft, Friedrich August von Anhalt-Zerbst, 1747-1793. 2/3 Taler 1763, Harzgerode oder Bernburg. Fast vorzüglich. (lordship of Jever, Frederick Augustus of Anhalt-Zerbst, 1747-93, 2/3 thaler of 1763, Harzgerode or Bernburg mints. About extremely fine.)"

This rare type, struck to the lightweight standard of a Prussian thaler, is the only two-thirds thaler from this locale issued during the eighteenth century. It is rare. Jever, on the North Sea between Oldenburg and Ostfriesland, passed thru many hands. It was briefly Russian 1793-98 and 1813-18, French 1807-13 and finally annexed to Oldenburg in 1818.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 12.96 g, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen 13.04 g.

Catalog reference: Merzdorf 123. Mann 418, KM 95.
