SB1024-75552r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75552 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Napoleonic Java. 2 Stuivers Bonk, 1810. NGC AU Details--Environmental Damage. Rectangular 'bonk' type. An always popular type with the thick cut copper. Both the date and denomination are well centered." In 1794, the old United Provinces were overthrown and the Batavian Republic established under the "protection" of the revolutionary French republic. This had little effect in the East Indies and normal trade, carried on by British merchants, continued. In an attempt to force Britain to a trade deal, Napoleon imposed the Continental System (effectively a trade embargo) on all his puppet states. This was widely flouted in the Batavian Republic. Tiring of this, Napoleon abolished the republic in 1806 and installed his brother Louis as king of Holland. Locals in the East Indies acknowledged this by removing the "VOC" from the coinage and replaced it with the royal monogram "L·N". Fearful of a trade embargo, the British seized Java in 1811 and occupied it until 1816. This type was struck 1809-10.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 23.1 g, copper.
