This specimen was struck for Japan by the Tokyo mint, which issued this type 1989-2019. It was issued in collector sets only for years 2009-13 and 2016-19. The aluminum yen was introduced in 1955 as part of Macarthur's currency reform of 1948, which dropped all denominations under one yen. A similar type was issued under Hirohito's name in immense quantities.

Recorded mintage: 1,260,990,000 plus 227,000 proofs.

Specification: 1 g, aluminum, 20 mm diameter, plain edge.
