The five sen was orignally a silver coin the size of a half dime. It was copper-nickel until 1932, then nickel 1933-37, aluminum bronze 1938-40, aluminum 1940-43 and tin-zinc 1944-46. This is the final issue of the denomination. A few were made of porcelain in 1945 but were not issued for circulation.
Recorded mintage: 180,000,000 for 1945-46.
