This specimen was struck for Japan by the Tokyo mint, which issued this type 1941-43. Until 1938, the sen was a bronze coin, 3.75 g. It was aluminum 1940-43. The denomination was terminated after 1946, the victim of inflation and the disaster of World War Two. Two different weights exist for 1943.
Recorded mintage: 1,163,949,434 (Y59) plus 627,160,000 (Y59a).
Specification: 0.65 g, aluminum, 22 mm diameter (Y59) or 0.55 g (Y59a).
