This specimen was lot 4428 in Goldberg sale 65 (Los Angeles, September 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Japan. 20 Yen, 1917. Taisho-6, Yoshihito, 1912-1926. Choice brilliant mint luster. NGC graded MS-64." This type was struck 1913-20 during the Taisho era in considerable numbers but remains scarce today with some dates rare. It seems likely that most of the issue remained in government hands as backing for currency until the inflation of World War One ended any likelihood of circulating the coin.
Recorded mintage: 6,208,885.
Specification: 16.66 g, 0.900 fine gold, .482 troy oz AGW
