This specimen was lot 6889 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 5 Yen, Year 45 (1912). NGC MS-64. WINGS Approved. Final year for type. Choice example with only a few stray bag marks. Nice strike, lightly toned with full cartwheel luster throughout." This type was issued intermittently 1897-1912. It represents a 50% reduction in weight from the type of 1872-97. A few gold five yen were struck for the Taisho emperor in 1913, 1924 and 1930. The modern five yen, introduced in 1949, is brass.
