Goldberg sale 59, lot 3268
Japan 1911 20 yen rev Goldberg 59-3268.jpg

This specimen was lot 3268 in Goldberg auction 59 (Beverly Hills, June, 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Japan. 20 Yen, 1911. Mutsuhito (The Meiji Era), 1867-1912. Radiant Sun. Reverse: Value in wreath. NGC graded MS-62." This type was struck during the Meiji era in considerable numbers but remains scarce today with some dates rare. The type was terminated in 1912. It seems likely that most of the issue remained in government hands as backing for currency until the inflation of World War One ended any likelihood of circulating the coin.

Recorded mintage: 1,272,450.

Specification: 16.67 g, 0.900 fine gold, 28.78 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-53; KM-Y34, Meiji-44.
