This specimen was lot 3267 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $833.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Japan. 10 Yen, 1909. Meiji-42. Mutsuhito, 1867-1912. Radiant sun. Reverse: Value in wreath. NGC graded MS-63." This type was struck during the Meiji era in considerable numbers but remains scarce today with some dates rare. The type was terminated in 1910. It seems likely that most of the issue remained in government hands as backing for currency until the inflation of World War One ended any likelihood of circulating the coin.

Recorded mintage: 2,165,660.

Specification: 8.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, .241 troy oz AGW, milled edge.

Catalog reference: Fr-51; KM-Y33.
