Japan 1899 (M32) 10 yen
The first specimen was lot 33390 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "Meiji gold 10 Yen Year 32 (1899) AU55 NGC. Clean surfaces for the grade make this a particular[l]y attractive coin to target in the AU range." The second specimen was lot 33412 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[2] noted, "Meiji gold 10 Yen Year 32 (1899) MS63 NGC. Supremely satiny for the assigned grade, with delightful cartwheel luster which seems to push the upper bounds of the choice range." This type was struck during the Meiji era in considerable numbers but remains scarce today with some dates rare. It seems likely that most of the issue remained in government hands as backing for currency until the inflation of World War One ended any likelihood of circulating the coin. It was last struck in 1910.
