This specimen was lot 4449 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $164.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Japan. 2 Sen, 1881. Meiji 14. Reddish toning. NGC graded MS-63 Brown." The two sen was introduced in 1873 as part of the Meiji coinage reform. Large quantities of this type (190 million) were minted 1877-84 but then the denomination was dropped. Prior to the opening of Japan in the 1850's and 1860's, Japanese coins were a mix of Chinese-style cast copper cash, silver rectangular "bu" and rare, gold "oban."
