Jaipur 1892/13 nazarana rupee
This specimen was lot 38589 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Jaipur. Nazarana Rupee, 1892/Year 13. Sawai Jaipur Mint. Madho Singh II (under Victoria as Empress). NGC MS-64." The Indian princely state of Jaipur fell under British protection in 1818 and survived until 1949, when all the princes were deposed by the government of the newly independent republic. This type was introduced in 1882 (year 3) in the name of Madho Singh II and queen Victoria, and was struck until 1921 (year 42), long after Victoria's death. The SCWC lists two types of silver rupees, struck concurrently, a thin, flat "Nazarana rupee" (shown here) and a smaller, thicker, dump style rupee (KM 145).
