Sincona sale 25, lot 2033

This specimen was lot 2033 in Sincona sale 25 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 35,000 CHF (about US$43,233 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Vittorio Emanuele II. 1859-1878 100 Lire 1878. R, Rome Dies by Ferraris. VITTORIO - EMANUELE II Head to l., signature of the die cutter below. Rev. REGNO - D'ITALIA Crowned arms of Savoy on laurel wreath, R - L· 100 below. Extremely rare, only 294 pieces minted. Good extremely fine. Tiny scratches in field and minor rim nick."

This type was struck in Rome 1872 and 1878 and both dates are rare. The similar twenty lire (Fr-12) is common.

Specification: 32.25 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 32.22 g.
