Isle of Man SB816-21072r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21072 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $4,465. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. 5 Shillings Token, 1811. PCGS PROOF-63 Secure Holder. Issued by Douglas Bank. "PEEL CASTLE - ISLE OF MAN" Peel Castle and sailboat; Reverse: "THE DOUGLAS BANK CO AT THEIR BANK, DOUGLAS" Seven line inscription: "PROMISE / TO PAY / THE BEARER / ON DEMAND / 5 SHILLINGS / BRITISH / 1811". Gorgeous iridescent toning graces the reverse, while a deep slate gray tone with hints of iridescence add a stormy motif to the harbor scene. A RARE and highly sought after large denomination token issue." In the late eighteenth century and into the Napoleonic period, the Royal Mint abdicated its responsibility to furnish sufficient coinage for the rapidly expanding kingdom. Private issuers leapt into the breach, including the Douglas Bank on the Isle of Man, which issued half penny, penny, shilling, half crown and one crown tokens in 1811. None are common but this one is the largest and most desirable.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-Tn14; Prid-46a; C-MTK-010.
