Ireland 1553 shilling
This specimen was lot 33234 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. Shilling, 1553. Mary I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. Obverse: Crowned and mantled half-length portrait left; Reverse: Crowned harp flanked by crowned M and R. A RARE and desirable Irish portrait issue of Mary, and appealing as an early dated type, with the reverse legend ending in M:D:LIII. Arguably graded on the conservative side; though the surfaces do display wiping as noted, much of the weakness of detail can be attributed to strike rather than wear." Most of the early monarchs of England did not bother with providing coinage for Ireland, but Mary was the exception.
