This specimen was lot 32162 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. Azadi, SH 1382 (2003). Tehran Mint. NGC MS-66. A beautiful Azadi featuring Ayatollah Khomeini, this premium Gem offers rich luster and sharp details. A less commonly encountered type. From the Yasmin Collection." This type is listed in the SCWC for SH 1370-1375; however, dates as late as SH 1386 (2007) are known. The module matches the old pahlavi struck by the shah. Gold quarter, half, 2½ and five azadis also exist. The coins generally trade as bullion coins. Numista notes, "After year 1386 they continued minting this coin, but they still use 1386 as mint year." The fearsome visage of the ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeyni adorns the obverse.
