This specimen was lot 4988 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $2,415. The catalog description[2] noted, "Iran. 5 Pahlavi, SH1353 (1974). Muhammad Reza Pahlavi. Head left. Reverse: Crown above lion. NGC graded MS-64." This type, struck SH 1339-1353 during the reign of Muhammed Reza Shah (r. 1941-79), was minted to the standard of a British five pounds. Gold one, 2½ and ten pahlavis also exist. The coins generally trade as bullion coins. After the shah's overthrow, the central bank issued Pahlavi-sized coins featuring the ayatollah Khomeini (KM 1264).
