Sincona sale 88, lot 198

This specimen was lot 198 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,700 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Qajar Dynasty, Naser al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 (1848-1896). Toman 1266 AH (1850), Mashhad Mint. Seltene Münzstätte und Typ, Prachtexemplar; Rare type and mint. NGC MS66. Cabinet piece. Purchased from Spink & Son, London, in 2011. Finest certified by NGC."

This gold denomination was struck at numerous mints in the beginning of the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah. It is listed from Mashhad for AH 1266-68, 1273-76, 1280, 1286-88. This example realized fifteen times the catalog value.
