SB820-23069r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23069 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. Zand Dynasty. 1/4 Mohur, AH 1197 (1782). Khuy Mint. 'Ali Murad Khan. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. An anonymous type previously attributed to Sadiq Khan, these VERY RARE issues are now assigned to 'Ali Murad Khan, Sadiq's successor. Beautifully centered and struck, with a honey-golden tone. Compare to a similar example of this date--a PCGS MS-63--which realized a total of $780 in our June 2020 CCO (lot 73055)." The Zand dynasty, founded by Karim Khan Zand, conquered and ruled most of Afsharid Iran (except Khorasan) in the eighteenth century. Karim Khan's successors lacked his ability and the state soon crumbled under Qajar attacks.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.75 g, gold, this specimen 2.74 g.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, Album-E2815 (RRR).
