Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands in 1949. Being a scattered series of islands with differing traditions, Indonesia has struggled to remain a cohesive nation. The coin shown is a fifty sen from the province of Irian Barat, also known as Irian Jaya, the Indonesian name for the region. This coinage was demonetized in 1971.
