India 1946(c) anna
This specimen was lot 952 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $2,142. The catalog description[1] noted, "Calcutta, India (British), copper-nickel original proof 1 anna, George VI, 1946-C, short trefoils, PCGS PR64, with original manila holder from the mint. Muted luster with light golden toning all over, polished-die surfaces, short trefoils variety, far rarer than the restrike issue and highly desirable with original envelope from "H.M.'s Mint," visually superior to Pittman's example, finest known at either PCGS or NGC." The anna was 1/64 of a rupee. It was introduced as a copper-nickel coin in 1906 and struck in that form until 1942, when it was converted to nickel-brass during the war. This issue of 1946-47 reverted to copper-nickel and is common, tho the proofs are rare.
Recorded mintage: 100,820,000.
Specification: 3.87 g, copper-nickel.
Catalog reference: SW-9.183; KM-538 (not listed in proof).
