India 1933 1/4 anna
This specimen was lot 72356 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $45. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Anna, 1933. Calcutta Mint. PCGS MS-65 Red Brown. With virtually flawless surfaces and a an intense reddish-brown hue, this lustrous Gem offers exceptional charm and beauty." The quarter anna was 1/64th of a rupee and was the largest bronze denomination struck under the predecimal system. It was struck in large numbers throughout the Raj until 1942. The 1933 is common and is available only from Calcutta. The absence of a dot below the date marks this as a product of the Calcutta mint.
