Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74173

This specimen was lot 74173 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Rupee, 1912-(B). Bombay Mint. George V. NGC MS-64. This handsome near-Gem glows with a soft luster and strong eye appeal." This type was struck 1912-20, 1925-30, 1934 and 1936. The Calcutta mint contributed another 9,587,000. In the 1950's and 1960's both mints restruck coins of the Raj for sale to collectors; many restrikes may be distinguished by rusty dies.

Recorded mintage: 2,200,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 2.92 g, 0.917 fine silver.
