This specimen was lot 71654 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Rupee, 1901-C. Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. A wholesome coin with good strike, gentle luster in the fields, and even gray toning." The quarter rupee struck during the Raj was about the size of a dime but contained about 12¢ of silver. The mintmarks (or lack of them) varied from year to year; for 1901, Calcutta used an incuse mintmark.
