India 1881(c) mohur
This specimen was lot 31821 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Victoria gold Mohur 1881-(c) MS62 PCGS, Calcutta mint. Type A Bust. Younger bust with V on ground line. A nice, clean example with bright amber-gold tone and satiny luster. From the Hamilton Collection of British India Coins." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1891 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest gold denomination. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-75 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN."
