UBS sale 85, lot 916

This specimen was lot 916 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$570 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ISLAND, 500 Kronur 1961. Fast FDC." (Iceland, 500 kronur, 1961, nice uncirculated)

This one-year commemorative is the first gold coin issued by Iceland. Like nearly all gold coins issued after World War Two, it did not circulate. The krona was reformed in 1981, with 100 old kronur = 1 new krona.

Recorded mintage: 10,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 8.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .259 troy oz AGW, this specimen 8,97 g.
