Hupeh (1902-05) 10 cash Y-122.3
Hupeh Province is located in east-central China. The mint was active from the early Manchu dynasty, and adapted for modern coin mintage in 1895. Altho the regime decreed the striking of one, five, ten and twenty cash in copper, the vast majority produced were ten cash. This specimen was lot 55179 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Hupeh. 10 Cash, ND (1902-05). NGC MS-63 Brown. Water Dragon variety, with claw inside whiskers. A boldly struck and softly lustrous coin with even dark brown patina, great overall eye appeal for the type." On this variety, the water dragon is shown flying over a mountain.
