Hungary 1935-BP 2 pengo KM-511
This specimen was lot 6758 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. 2 Pengo, 1935-BP. NGC MS-61. KEY DATE of type. Free of any major detracting marks. Soft silver luster throughout with light golden toning beginning in periphery. From the Mezo-Toth Kalman Collection." The coinage of interwar Hungary is neglected and few pay attention to this rarity of a type struck 1929-39. A commemorative two pengo was struck in 1935 (KM 513) honoring the tercentenary of Pazmany University, perhaps accounting for the low mintage of this date. The module matches that of a French ten francs of the thirties.
Recorded mintage: 50,000.
Specification: 10 g, 0.640 fine silver, 27 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-511; Huszar-2243.
