Sincona sale 9, lot 5949

This specimen was lot 2679 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 8,500 CHF (about US$10,751 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"UNGARN Franz Joseph, 1848-1916. Goldgulden 1896. Jahrtausendfeier der Landnahme Ungarns. Gutes vorzüglich. (kingdom of Hungary, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, goldgulden of 1896, 1000th anniversary of the name of Hungary, good extremely fine.)"

This coin or medal is consigned to the Unusual World Coins and may not have been officially issued, tho it is listed in Friedberg, Herinek and Veselý. The series also included an obol, brakteat, denar, groschen, thaler and St. George thaler, all featuring obsolete designs. The price realized suggested that the buyer thought it was an authentic coin.
