Hungary 1870-KB 8 forint
This specimen was lot 1096 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$15,072 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. 20 Francs (8 Forint) 1870 KB, Kremnitz. 6.43 g. Aversumschrift in Serifenschrift. FERENCZ JOZSEF I.K.A.CS.ES M.H.S.D.O.AP.KIR. Belorbeerter Kopf nach rechts, unten das Mzz. K.B. Rv. MAGYAR - KIRALYSAG Gekröntes ungarisches Wappen zwischen 20 / Fr. und 8 / Frt., unten die Jahreszahl. Herinek vgl. 252. Unediert. This type was issued for Hungary 1870-80 in respectable quantities from the Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. This example is a rare variety with seriffed lettering on the obverse. The denomination was intended to exchange for twenty French francs. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues.
