Hungary 1702 poltura
This specimen was lot 4713 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €180 (about US$236 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. Leopold I. 1657-1705. Ku.-Poltura 1702, Schemnitz. Gekrönter Buchstabe L (Leopold), umher Palmzweige//Verschlungenes Monogramm CS (Schemnitz), zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 02. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön +. Aus der Sammlung Eberhard Link. Exemplar der Auktion Lanz 98, München 2000, Nr. 208. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, crowned "L" in palm wreath; reverse: mintmark in monogram divides the date. Edge crack, very fine or better.)"
The poltura was normally a silver or billon coin worth 1½ krajczar or a half groschen (sixty krajczar made a forint or gulden). This copper issue of 1695-1703 was probably a result of the chaos of the Rakoczy rebellion. The Austrians conquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's but never succeeded in conquering the Hungarians.
