Hungary in 1559, from Putzger's Atlas

This specimen was lot 34478 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary: Ferdinand I (1521-64) gold Ducat (Goldgulden) 1552 K-B AU58 ANACS, Kremnitz mint. FERDINANDI * D | G * R * VNGARIE, crowned Madonna and child seated on crescent; Austrian shield below / S * LADISLAVS * | * REX * 1552 *, standing figure of the king, halberd in right hand, globus cruciger in left; mintmark to either side. A spectacular and glistening representative, replete with full die polish lines and mint luster, full-centered and a perfectly round flan, and perhaps only the most minuscule signs of handling--all suggesting that it is likely conservatively graded." Friedberg lists this type for 1527-65 from Kremnitz (shown here), Neustadt (Fr-49) and Hermannstadt (Fr-50).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-48, Huszar-895.
