Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 41030
SB821-41030r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41030 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. Goldgulden, ND (1399). Buda Mint. Sigismund. NGC AU-58. Obverse: St. Ladislaus standing facing, holding axe and orb; M-A across field; Reverse: Coat-of-arms of Hungary and Brandenburg. Fairly well centered and struck, with a charming golden-orange hue on each side." Hungary was a major producer of gold coins in the late middle ages, perhaps because of her control of mines in Transylvania, and this type is fairly common. These were issued throughout Sigismund's long reign (1387-1437) and normally cannot be identified as to date of issue. During Sigismund's reign, the goldgulden matched the ducat; later issues were lighter and lower in fineness.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.52 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-9; Huszar-572; Rethy-118; Fyrnas-H.27.1.
