Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71190

This specimen was lot 71190 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONG KONG. Cent, 1901. London Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-64 Brown. This nicely preserved near-Gem example displays a lovely combination of rich brown patina with original mint red amongst the devices." This type was struck 1863-1901 in substantial numbers but is not easy to find in nice condition. This subtype is listed for 1879-81, 1899-1901. Hong Kong was seized by the British from China in 1842 and held by them until its return in 1997. In Hong Kong, 100 cents = one dollar; sterling coinage was never used there.
