H3067-34470r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34470 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $930. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hong Kong: Victoria 5 Cents 1899 MS67 ★ NGC. The single finest certified example in the NGC census, and the only one to be awarded the coveted star designation, this satiny and superbly lustrous little Gem more than deserves its position of prominence. The surfaces are lightly stippled with a mix of silvery blues, red-violets, and sunset faint oranges. For reference, a PCGS MS67 example (without the stellar toning) hammered for $950 in Stack's Bowers' April 2018 Hong Kong Auction (Lot 53622). From the Feeling Good Collection." This type was struck at the Royal Mint 1872-1901 and this date is listed as common in all grades. British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China.

Recorded mintage: 9,377,000.

Specification: 1.36 g, 0.800 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 5.
