Hildesheim 1736-UA W thaler Dav-2347
This specimen was lot 5275 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,046 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HILDESHEIM, STADT, Reichstaler 1736, mit Titel Karls VI. Vollständiges Stadtwappen//Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Reichsapfel auf der Brust. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, fast vorzüglich. (city of Hildesheim, thaler of 1736, struck in the name of Charles VI. Obverse: city arms; reverse: crowned double-headed eagle with orb on its breast. Extremely rare, fine patina, about extremely fine.)"
The city (Lutheran) and bishop of Hildesheim (Catholic) both issued thalers in the eighteenth century; the resulting types range from rare to very rare. Hildesheim was annexed to Prussia in 1803, then was part of the Napoleonic puppet kingdom of Westphalia 1807-13, then awarded to Hannover in 1813.
