Hildesheim 1624 thaler Dav-5419
This specimen was lot 4268 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HILDESHEIM, STADT Reichstaler 1624, mit Titel Ferdinands II. R Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 29, Dortmund 2005, Nr. 1159. (city of Hildesheim, thaler of 1624, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Rare, very fine.)"
This type was struck by the city, not the bishop, and is very scarce. The subsequent thaler (Dav-5420), struck 1624-28 and 1631, had the date divided by the eagle's crown. Ferdinand of Bavaria (bishop administrator of Hildesheim 1612-50) was also provost of Bertesgaden, archbishop of Cologne, bishop of Liège, bishop of Münster, bishop of Paderborn and abbot of Malmedy even tho he was never ordained as a priest.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29 g, silver, this specimen 28,98 g.
