This specimen was lot 75045 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. Taler, 1772-RF. Darmstadt Mint. Ludwig IX. PCGS VF-25." The landgrave was only an occasional issuer of thalers and most are scarce. This one year type also comes with initials AK on the reverse. From the reverse legend "X· EINE FEINE MARCK·", we deduce that this is a convention thaler and we have given the specification accordingly.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.
