Sincona sale 38, lot 1185

This specimen was lot 1185 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 875 CHF (about US$1,049 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Darmstadt, Landgrafschaft, Ernst Ludwig, 1648-1739 1/4 Dukat 1705 (aus 1703). Darmstadt. Gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Ernest Louis, 1678-1739, quarter ducat of 1705, Darmstadt mint, Good extremely fine.)"

The last quarter ducat from this locale is dated 1706. Eighth, half, single and double ducats exist from this period. The landgrave was promoted to Grand Duke in 1806 by Napoleon.
