Sincona sale 73, lot 1144

This specimen was lot 1144 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Hessen-Darmstadt, Landgrafschaft, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum. Ludwig V. 1596-1626. Taler 1626, Darmstadt. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis V, thaler of 1626, Darmstadt mint. Rare, Good very fine.)"

Seventeenth century coinage from this state is very rare. This is the first thaler we have posted to this site. This is in contrast to the plethora of issues from the neighboring Hesse-Cassel. The SCWC notes that this issue of 1626 comes with a three or four digit date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.81 g.

Catalog reference: KM 23.3, Müller 3115. Dav-6798 A.
