Künker sale 293, lot 890

This specimen was lot 890 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HESSEN-KASSEL, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm (IX.) I. (1785-) 1803-1821. Konv.-Taler 1813 (wie üblich spätere Nachprägung vor 1850), Kassel. Mit glattem Rand. Büste r. am Schulterabschnitt die Signatur K (Wilhelm Körner, Stempelschneider in Kassel 1804-1833)//Gekröntes, neunfeldiges Wappen mit leerem Mittelschild, mit Girlande und Lorbeerzweigen verziert, unten die Jahreszahl. RR Vorzügliches Exemplar mit feiner Tönung. (Germany, electorate of Hesse-Cassel, William I, 1803-21, convention thaler of 1813, Cassel mint, with plain edge, restrike from about 1850. Obverse: bust right with engraver's initial 'K' on truncation; reverse: crowned, nine-fold arms with blank central escutcheon, with garland and laurel wreath around, date below. Rare, extremely fine example with fine toning.)"

The original issue, with lettered edge, is very rare; the restrike, with plain edge, is merely very scarce. It is the last convention thaler from this state.
