Hesse-Cassel 1784-DF 5 thaler Fr-1283
This specimen was lot 3724 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,842 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, Friedrich II. 1760-1785. Friedrichs d'or (5 Taler) 1784, Kassel. Sternpistole. GOLD. R Attraktives Exemplar, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, Frederick II, 1760-85, frederick d'or (= five thaler) of 1784, Cassel mint. Scarce, attractive, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The five thaler, modeled on the Prussian friedrichs d'or, was introduced into Hesse-Cassel in 1771 and was struck intermittently there well into the nineteenth century. This type is noted for 1783-85.
