Goldberg sale 115, lot 2118
Hesse-Cassel G115-2118r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2118 in Goldberg sale 115 (Los Angeles, February 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hesse-Cassel. Taler, 1776-BR. Friedrich II, The Great, 1760-1785. Head right. Reverse: Star of the Order of the Golden Lion. Cleaned. Fine." The SCWC lists this type for 1776-79 and is the most common thaler for this locale in the eighteenth century. We don't think this prince was ever called "Friedrich II, The Great'; it is likely that the auction cataloguer has him confused with Frederick of Prussia, who lived at the same time.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2303; KM-516.
