Henneberg-Ilmenau 1701-BA 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 275 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 2,250 CHF (about US$3,429 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Henneberg, Grafschaft. Gemeinschaftsprägung, 1692-1702. 2/3 Taler 1701, Ilmenau. Ausbeute der Gruben in Ilmenau. Münzmeister Sebastian Altmann. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, county of Henneberg, joint issue, 1692-1702, two-thirds thaler of 1701, Ilmenau mint, for the Ilmenau mines. Extremely rare, Extremely Fine, Nicely toned.)"
The counts of Henneberg fell extinct in 1580, after which the county was co-ruled by various Saxon dukes. In this period, the rulers were Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Weimar. This rare type is listed in the SCWC as a half thaler, for which the reported weight is correct. Full thalers (KM 35) and quarter thalers (KM 40) also exist.
