Hannover 1839-S 2-1/2 thaler Fr-1174
This specimen was lot 198 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$720 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Ernst August, 1837-1851. 2 1/2 Taler 1839, Hannover. Sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Hannover, Ernest Augustus, 1837-51, 2½ thalers of 1839, Hannover mint. Very fine.)"
King Wilhelm IV (1830-37) is better known as William IV of England. After his death in 1837, England passed to Victoria and Hannover passed to a cadet branch in the male line. This type was minted 1839, 1840 and 1843 and is rather scarce. The gold 2½, five and ten thaler were superseded by the half krone and krone in 1857. Hannover was annexed to Prussia in 1866, ending the coinage.
