Sincona sale 22, lot 1395

This specimen was lot 1395 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hannover, ab 1814 Königreich, Ernst August, 1837-1851 Taler 1838. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Hannover, Ernest Augustus (1837-51), thaler of 1838, very fine to extremely fine.)"

On William IV's death in 1837, the connection between Hannover and England was severed as Victoria became queen of England and Ernst August became king of Hannover. His tyrannical ways annoyed his subjects who nearly toppled him in the revolution of 1848. This type of 1838-40 is available but not cheap.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.82 g, .993 fine silver, 0.537 troy oz ASW, this specimen 16.87 g.

Catalog reference: Kahnt 225. AKS 100, KM 182, Dav-667.
